Dynamic India

India is the largest dynamic democracy and has the second largest population in the world approaching about 1.1 billion. In April-May,2004 election was held for the Lower House of the Indian Parliament. Peaceful and smooth transition of power from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to the Congress led United Progressive Alliance ( UPA) has once again demonstrated that the world's largest democracy is endowed with a stable and mature democratic mechinery and institutions. The wonder of wonders was that out of about 670 million registered voters, about 370 million exercised their franchise but not a single ballot paper was used, as the entire voting was done on electronic voting machines and in some remote corners of the country the machine was carried on the back of elephants.
